Alaska's Governor Mansion Garden Redesign
Juneau, Alaska

Established in 1911, the
Governors Mansion Garden has been a Juneau showpiece for nearly 90 years. Due to
recent budgetary cutbacks it was necessary to limit the operational aspects of the garden,
yet maintain the high image of the garden. The garden was redesigned utilizing both new
and existing historical plants, to create a lower maintenance garden. The design condenses
the planting areas and creates year round interest through the use of flowering trees,
shrubs and perennials. New varieties of plants unique to Juneau were planted with heirloom
Alaskan varieties to restore the garden as a visual showpiece for residents and visitors
alike in the capital city.
AWARD: This design was the recipient of the 2001
Historic Preservation Award of Excellence.
